Earwax is a natural substance that you should not routinely remove unless it is impacting the ear or you are experiencing symptoms such as decreased hearing, fullness, itching or pain. A penlight otoscope is included in our Wax B Gone kits, to help you examine the ear canal and eardrum, and determine if ear wax is indeed the problem. However, if you are wearing a hearing aid, and you experience plugging of the hearing aid due to wax, you could benefit from regular irrigation.
No. Warm tap water is all that is necessary for ear irrigation.
Moisture in the ear canal can promote bacterial and fungal growth, so you need to dry your ear canal after irrigation. The alcohol solution will be the drying agent and the vinegar solution will leave an acid pH film in the ear canal. And, to make things easier….a dropper bottle is provided with the Wax B Gone kit to assist you.
75% of the time, you can successfully remove wax on the initial irrigation without ear drops. However, if after several irrigations and no success, studies have shown that the use of an earwax softening ear drop will help. A bottle of earwax softening drops is included in the Wax B Gone kits. If you want to make your own ear drops, you can follow instructions at Tips from an ENT on Safe In-home Earwax removal.
Yes, you can absolutely clean your ears by yourself! In fact, some people prefer this because you can control the water pressure from the sprayer trigger.
If you will be cleaning your ears by yourself, we suggest using the straight rigid wand rather than the flex wand because it is easier to use single-handed. When irrigating your ears by yourself we recommend doing so in the shower or over the sink with your head tilted sideways so the discharge of water and wax lands in the sink. Likewise you can use your free hand to hold the ear basin under your ear.
If you will have assistance from someone else to irrigate your ears, we recommend you are seated and snugly holding the ear basin under your ear. An ear basin is included in the kit.
Yes, you should use warm water to irrigate your ears. If you use cold water, you may experience temporary, subtle, dizziness.
The short answer…
If you are performing the irrigation process on yourself, use the Rigid Wand.

If you are having someone else perform the irrigation process on you, you can use either the flex wand or the rigid straight wand. Those that are performing the irrigation process tend to prefer the flex wand because they have more control over how they direct the irrigation tip into the ear canal.

The long answer…
If you will be cleaning your ears by yourself, we recommend using the irrigation kit with the rigid straight wand because it is easier to use single-handedly.
The flexible wand requires one hand to pull the spray trigger and the other hand to direct the irrigation tip into the ear canal making it impossible to hold the ear basin under your ear to catch the discharge from water and wax. Since the rigid wand is a solid extension of the trigger sprayer it only requires one hand to direct the irrigation tip into the ear canal and to pull the sprayer trigger leaving one hand free to hold the ear basin.
If you are using the irrigation kit by yourself and don’t want to hold the ear basin under your ear, you can use it in the shower or over the sink. If you are using it over the sink, tilt your head sideways over the sink so the discharge of water and wax drains into the sink.
If someone else will be irrigating your ears, either the rigid or flexible wand can be used. As stated above, many people who perform the irrigation process on someone else tend to prefer the flex wand because they have more control over how they direct the irrigation tip into the ear canal.
There are a few reasons why someone may be unable to irrigate the earwax out of their ear after using the earwax softening drops and multiple bottle refills.
1) Proper application of the earwax softening drops is very important. It is very important to let your ear canal soak with the softening drops for 15 minutes and do keep your head tilted to the side the entire time (best done laying on your side). DO NOT use a cotton ball to keep the solution in your ear so you can walk around for 15 minutes, the cotton ball will absorb the solution and this defeats the purpose. If you have not allowed the solution to soak for 15 minutes, try again.
2) There are 2 types of earwax, soft and hard earwax. Soft earwax is typically very easy to remove with irrigation. Hard ear wax can be more difficult, in which case you will want to use earwax drops. CLICK HERE to see our article about the different types of earwax.
If you are having problems irrigating the earwax after using the earwax softening drops (included) and multiple bottle refills it’s probably because you have a very stubborn case of hard earwax. You may have to complete multiple applications of the earwax softening drops in this case. If after 3 applications of the softening drops you are still unable to irrigate the earwax you may need to visit your ENT physician.
No, irrigation should NOT hurt. If you feel any pain or painful discomfort, stop immediately.
If you have never experienced earwax irrigation, the first time can feel awkward but it should not be painful. We recommend starting with low pressure to get comfortable with the process. You can control the water pressure by how softly or firmly you pull the sprayer trigger. As you get more comfortable try applying more water pressure. The more water pressure you use, the quicker and more efficient earwax irrigation will be.
The SoftSpray® Irrigation Tip was designed to make irrigation more comfortable. By diverting the spray from one stream to 7 streams the irrigation experience is more comfortable than using an irrigation tip with a solid stream of water. Try it for yourself and let us know if you agree.
Water pressure with the Spray Bottle Kits is controlled with the spray trigger. Rapidly and firmly squeezing the pump trigger you will produce greater water pressure than slowly, and softly squeezing the spray trigger.
If this is your first time experiencing earwax irrigation, start with lighter water pressure until you are comfortable by slowly squeezing the trigger sprayer.
A new diagnostic test called the “Banji test” has recently been published in the ENT journals. The test consists of a pull on the external ear to determine if the patient notices a momentary increase in sound perception.
The test is simple, harmless and can discriminate between wax and other causes in about 90% of the cases.
The best way to determine if earwax is the problem is to have an assistant use the otoscope (not included in all model variations) to identify if and how much earwax is present.

The Premium Electronic Irrigation Kit has 5 settings. The settings are controlled by using the mode button, the second button down from the top of the device. There are 5 indicator lights just under the mode button. When only one light is illuminated you are using pressure setting 1 (the lowest pressure setting). When all 5 lights are illuminated, you are using pressure setting 5 (the highest pressure setting).
